Fungal toenail laser treatment | Aftercare
Your guide to caring for your nails following laser treatment at Seven Skin.
Laser treatment uses controlled energy to target the affected nail area. Following your appointment, ongoing nail care and good foot hygiene are important parts of managing your nail concerns and reducing the risk of reinfection.
Changes in nail appearance develop gradually as new nail grows. Understanding what to expect and how to care for your feet can help you maintain a consistent routine throughout your treatment journey.
Please follow the guidance below alongside any individual instructions provided during your appointment.
What to expect following treatment
Most clients can return to their usual daily activities following fungal toenail laser treatment, provided the treated area feels comfortable and no adverse reaction has occurred.
You may experience:
Temporary warmth: The nail or surrounding area may feel warm immediately following treatment.
Mild sensitivity: Some temporary tenderness or sensitivity may occur around the treated nail.
No immediate visible change: The existing discoloured or thickened nail will not necessarily look different straight after treatment.
Gradual nail growth: Any improvement in appearance is generally observed as the nail grows over the following months.
The response varies between individuals. Significant or persistent pain, blistering, burns or increasing inflammation are not expected and should be assessed promptly.
Caring for your nails after treatment
Keep your feet clean and dry
Wash your feet regularly using a gentle cleanser and dry them thoroughly, paying particular attention to the spaces between your toes.
Avoid leaving your feet damp for prolonged periods, particularly after bathing, exercising or wearing enclosed footwear.
Maintain good nail hygiene
Keep toenails trimmed carefully and avoid cutting them excessively short or damaging the surrounding skin.
Do not pick, peel or attempt to remove damaged sections of the nail.
Avoid aggressive filing, cutting into the nail or using sharp instruments to remove thickened material yourself.
If your nails are particularly thick or difficult to manage, seek appropriate professional nail care.
Choose suitable footwear
Wear clean, breathable footwear where possible.
Change socks regularly, particularly after exercise or if your feet become damp.
Avoid prolonged use of tight, poorly ventilated footwear that encourages moisture build-up.
Avoid unnecessary irritation
If the nail or surrounding skin feels sensitive following treatment, avoid activities or footwear that place excessive pressure on the area until it has settled.
Do not apply harsh chemicals or irritating products to the treated nail or surrounding skin.
If you use prescribed or recommended antifungal products, continue them according to the instructions given by your prescribing clinician or pharmacist. Do not stop prescribed treatment without appropriate advice.
Reducing the risk of reinfection
Fungal nail infections can recur, particularly if fungal organisms remain present on the surrounding skin, footwear or items used for nail care.
To help reduce the risk:
Change socks daily and after activities that cause sweating.
Allow shoes to dry thoroughly between uses.
Consider suitable antifungal footwear products where recommended by a pharmacist or healthcare professional.
Avoid sharing nail clippers, files, towels or footwear.
Clean and disinfect reusable nail-care tools appropriately.
Wear protective footwear in communal changing rooms, swimming pool areas and shared showers.
Check for signs of athlete's foot, such as itching, peeling or scaling between the toes, and seek appropriate treatment if present.
Treating the nail alone may not prevent recurrence if an associated fungal skin infection remains untreated.
Good foot hygiene can help reduce reinfection risk, but it does not guarantee that infection will not return.
Nail polish and cosmetic nail products
Avoid applying nail polish, gel polish, acrylics or other cosmetic nail coverings to affected nails unless you've been advised that doing so is appropriate.
These products can make it more difficult to monitor changes in nail appearance and may complicate ongoing nail care.
If you're unsure whether a cosmetic product is suitable during your treatment course, please contact Seven Skin before applying it.
Understanding nail growth and results
Toenails grow slowly, so visible improvement can take considerably longer than the treatment appointment itself.
As the nail grows, any improvement may become apparent near the base of the nail, while the previously affected section gradually moves towards the tip.
Approximate toenail growth timelines:
Smaller toenails: Around 6–12 months for substantial nail replacement.
Big toenails: Around 12–18 months, sometimes longer.
These are general nail growth estimates, not guaranteed treatment results.
Nail growth varies depending on age, circulation, general health, previous nail damage and other individual factors.
Laser treatment does not guarantee eradication of fungal infection or complete restoration of normal nail appearance.
Evidence for laser treatment as a reliable cure for fungal nail infection remains limited. Some clients may require additional medical assessment or antifungal treatment.
Your ongoing treatment plan
Your recommended treatment schedule will be discussed during your consultation and reviewed as your nail responds.
Photographs may be taken with your consent to help monitor visible changes over time.
Even when improvement is not immediately noticeable, nail growth can be assessed during subsequent appointments.
If your nail appearance worsens, you develop new symptoms or your progress differs from what was expected, further medical assessment may be appropriate.
Discoloured or thickened nails are not always caused by fungal infection. Other conditions, including nail trauma, psoriasis and other nail disorders, can produce similar changes.
A confirmed fungal diagnosis may require laboratory testing arranged through an appropriate healthcare professional.
When to contact Seven Skin
Please contact the clinic promptly if you experience:
Persistent or increasing pain following treatment.
Blistering, burns or damage to the surrounding skin.
Significant redness, swelling or inflammation.
New or worsening tenderness around the nail.
Unexpected changes that concern you.
Seek prompt medical assessment if you develop spreading redness, discharge, increasing warmth, severe pain or fever, as these may indicate infection.
If you have diabetes, reduced circulation, neuropathy, immunosuppression or a condition affecting wound healing, seek medical advice promptly for any new foot wound, skin breakdown or signs of infection.
Any new or changing dark streak, unexplained pigmentation or bleeding beneath a nail should be assessed by a medical professional rather than assumed to be fungal.
