IPL Redness & Vascular treatment | Aftercare

Your guide to caring for your skin following IPL treatment at Seven Skin.

IPL treatment uses controlled pulses of light to target selected vascular concerns, including facial redness, rosacea-related redness and suitable superficial blood vessels.

Following treatment, your skin may experience temporary changes as it responds to the light energy. Appropriate aftercare is important to support recovery, minimise the risk of complications and protect your results.

Please follow the guidance below alongside the individual instructions provided during your appointment.

What to expect following treatment

Your skin's response will depend on the concern treated, treatment settings, area and individual skin sensitivity.

You may experience:

  • Redness and warmth: The treated area may feel warm, flushed or similar to mild sunburn immediately following treatment.

  • Temporary swelling: Mild swelling or puffiness may occur, particularly around the cheeks, nose or other sensitive facial areas.

  • Increased visibility of redness or vessels: Some treated vessels or areas of redness may initially appear more noticeable before gradually settling.

  • Temporary darkening or bruising: Certain superficial vessels may appear darker or develop temporary discolouration as they respond to treatment.

  • Sensitivity or dryness: Your skin may feel more sensitive, tight or dry during the initial recovery period.

Mild redness and warmth often improve within the first 24–48 hours, although swelling or other changes can last longer depending on your individual response.

Not everyone experiences the same reaction. If symptoms are severe, worsening or different from what was explained during your appointment, contact Seven Skin promptly.

The first 24–48 hours

Your skin may be more sensitive to heat, friction and certain skincare products immediately following IPL treatment.

During this period:

  • Cleanse gently using lukewarm water and a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser.

  • Avoid hot baths, hot showers directly over the treated area, saunas, steam rooms and other sources of excessive heat.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause significant flushing or overheating.

  • Do not rub, scratch, massage or exfoliate the treated skin.

  • Avoid fragranced products or anything that causes stinging or irritation.

  • Keep the skin comfortable with a gentle moisturiser recommended during your appointment.

  • If cooling is needed, use a clean, cool compress briefly and gently. Do not apply ice or frozen products directly to the skin.

If redness, warmth or swelling has not settled after 48 hours, continue to avoid aggravating activities and contact the clinic for individual advice.

Skincare and makeup

Your skin barrier may be temporarily more sensitive following IPL treatment.

During recovery:

  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser suitable for sensitive skin.

  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, strong vitamin C formulations and other potentially irritating active ingredients until the skin has recovered and you've been advised they can be resumed.

  • Avoid facial waxing, exfoliating treatments, chemical peels and other potentially irritating procedures until the treated area has fully recovered and you've received appropriate advice.

  • Do not pick, peel or disturb any areas of temporary crusting or discolouration.

  • Avoid introducing new skincare products while the skin is recovering.

Makeup: If the skin is intact, comfortable and free from significant irritation, makeup may be resumed in accordance with the advice provided during your appointment. Avoid makeup over blistered, broken or irritated skin.

If you're unsure whether a product is suitable, contact Seven Skin before applying it.

Sun protection — an essential part of your aftercare

IPL-treated skin may be more vulnerable to UV-related irritation and changes in pigmentation during recovery.

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen daily to intact treated skin, reapplying as directed, particularly when outdoors.

Additional precautions include:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure during the recovery period and for the specific interval advised during your appointment.

  • Use a wide-brimmed hat, shade or other physical protection when outdoors.

  • Avoid sunbeds and deliberate tanning throughout your treatment course.

  • Do not apply fake tan until the treated skin has fully recovered and you've followed your practitioner's guidance.

If the skin is blistered or broken, do not apply sunscreen directly to the affected area unless advised by an appropriate healthcare professional. Protect the area from sunlight using shade or suitable physical covering and seek advice.

Sun protection is particularly important for clients with rosacea-related redness, as UV exposure can also trigger flushing and aggravate symptoms.

Redness, rosacea and flushing

If your treatment was performed for facial redness or rosacea-related concerns, your skin may be particularly reactive during the recovery period.

Where possible, avoid personal triggers that cause significant flushing, such as excessive heat, very hot drinks, spicy foods or alcohol, especially while the skin remains sensitive.

Continue with a gentle skincare routine and avoid products that cause stinging, burning or irritation.

IPL may help reduce certain visible vascular features associated with rosacea, but it does not cure rosacea or prevent future flare-ups. Ongoing skincare, sun protection and trigger management may still be necessary.

If you use prescribed medication for rosacea or another skin condition, follow the medication advice agreed during your consultation. Do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance from the prescribing clinician.

Visible thread veins and superficial vessels

Following IPL treatment for suitable superficial blood vessels, the appearance of the treated area may change before improvement becomes noticeable.

Some vessels may initially appear darker or more prominent, while others may gradually become less visible over the following weeks.

Avoid rubbing, picking or applying unnecessary pressure to the treated area while it is recovering.

The response varies depending on the vessel size, depth, location and treatment settings. Some vascular concerns may require multiple sessions, and not every vessel will respond completely.

IPL is not appropriate for every type of vascular lesion. Any new, changing, unexplained or concerning lesion should be medically assessed rather than assumed to be a cosmetic thread vein.

When to contact Seven Skin

Please contact the clinic promptly if you experience:

  • Redness, swelling or discomfort that is increasing rather than gradually improving.

  • Persistent or significant heat, burning or pain.

  • Blistering, crusting, broken skin or suspected burns.

  • Unexpected darkening or lightening of the skin.

  • A reaction that is more severe or prolonged than discussed during your appointment.

  • Any other change that concerns you.

If you develop blistering or broken skin, do not pick the area or apply active skincare products. Contact the clinic promptly for advice and appropriate assessment.

Possible signs of infection include spreading redness, increasing pain, warmth, discharge or fever. Seek prompt medical assessment if these occur.

Seek urgent medical attention for severe or rapidly worsening pain, extensive blistering, rapidly spreading swelling or signs of a serious reaction. Call 999 for breathing difficulties, swelling affecting the airway or other life-threatening symptoms.

If you experience eye pain, visual disturbance or any change in vision following treatment, seek urgent medical assessment.

Do not wait until your next appointment to report a concerning reaction.

Your results and ongoing treatment plan

Improvement following IPL vascular treatment is often progressive.

Some redness or superficial vessels may become less noticeable over the following weeks as the skin responds to treatment.

The number of sessions required varies depending on the concern, its severity and your individual response. Results cannot be guaranteed, and some conditions may require ongoing management or maintenance treatment.

Your skin will be reassessed before further sessions, and treatment will only continue where clinically appropriate.
