Laser Hair Removal | Aftercare

Your treatment doesn't end when you leave the clinic.

Following the correct aftercare is an important part of your laser hair removal journey. Your skin needs time to recover following treatment, and taking the appropriate precautions helps minimise irritation, reduce the risk of complications and support your ongoing results.

Please read the guidance below carefully and refer back to it after every appointment, even if you've previously had laser hair removal.

These instructions complement the personalised advice provided during your appointment.

01. What to expect following treatment

Laser hair removal uses controlled light energy to target the hair follicle. Following treatment, your skin may temporarily react to the heat delivered during the procedure.

Common, expected responses can include:

  • Mild redness or a pink appearance in the treated area.

  • A sensation of warmth, similar to mild sun exposure.

  • Slight swelling or small raised bumps around individual hair follicles.

  • Temporary tenderness or increased skin sensitivity.

These reactions often begin settling within a few hours, although some may last longer depending on your skin, the treatment area and your individual response.

Important: Significant pain, blistering, broken skin or worsening symptoms should not be treated as a routine reaction. Please follow the guidance under When to contact the clinic.

02. The first 24–48 hours

Protecting your skin during the initial recovery period is essential.

During this time:

  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid unnecessary touching.

  • Use cool or lukewarm water rather than hot water.

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and other sources of excessive heat.

  • Avoid vigorous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating and friction.

  • Avoid swimming pools and hot tubs until the skin has settled and in accordance with your treatment instructions.

  • Avoid scratching, rubbing, exfoliating or using body scrubs on the treated area.

  • Avoid perfumed products, deodorants and other potentially irritating products directly on treated skin.

  • Avoid makeup and active skincare ingredients, including retinoids and exfoliating acids, until the skin has recovered and you have been advised it is safe to resume them.

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing where possible to minimise friction.

If the area feels warm, a clean, cool compress may provide comfort. Do not apply ice or frozen packs directly to the skin.

Only apply soothing or skincare products recommended or approved for your treatment. If you're unsure whether a product is suitable, contact the clinic before using it.

If redness, tenderness or irritation continues beyond the initial recovery period, continue avoiding heat, friction and active products until the skin has fully settled and contact Seven Skin for advice.

03. Sun exposure & skin protection

Following laser treatment, your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight.

Sun exposure and tanning can increase the risk of unwanted pigmentation changes and other complications.

Throughout your treatment course:

  • Avoid deliberate tanning, sunbeds and prolonged direct sun exposure.

  • Protect treated areas with clothing and shade wherever possible.

  • Once the skin has recovered sufficiently for topical products, use broad-spectrum SPF 50 with strong UVA protection on exposed treated areas.

  • Reapply sunscreen as directed, particularly when spending time outdoors.

  • Do not apply fake tan to recently treated or irritated skin.

  • Inform Seven Skin about any sun exposure, tanning or changes in skin colour before your next appointment.

If you're planning a holiday or expect significant sun exposure, please discuss this before arranging your next treatment.

Never proceed with treatment on recently tanned, sunburnt or irritated skin without a professional reassessment.

04. Hair shedding & between appointments

Laser hair removal works progressively, which means changes develop over time rather than immediately following each appointment.

Over the following days and weeks, you may notice treated hairs gradually working their way out of the skin.

This is part of the normal shedding process and can sometimes look like continued hair growth.

Between appointments:

  • Allow treated hairs to shed naturally.

  • Do not wax, tweeze, thread or epilate the treatment area, as these methods remove hair from the follicle and can interfere with your course.

  • Avoid picking at individual hairs or attempting to pull them out.

  • Shaving may be resumed once the skin has fully recovered, in line with the instructions provided at your appointment.

  • Avoid exfoliating until the treated area has settled and you have been advised it is appropriate.

You may notice that hair growth becomes finer, slower or less dense as your course progresses. However, responses vary between individuals and treatment areas.

Not every hair will respond during the same appointment, which is why multiple sessions are recommended.

05. When to contact the clinic

Please contact Seven Skin promptly if you experience any reaction that is unexpected, worsening or causing concern.

This includes:

  • Blistering, burns or broken skin.

  • Scabbing, crusting, weeping or discharge.

  • Increasing redness, swelling, tenderness or pain rather than gradual improvement.

  • Significant swelling or swelling that does not begin to settle.

  • Unusual darkening or lightening of the skin.

  • Persistent irritation or a reaction lasting longer than expected.

  • Any other unexpected change in the treated area.

Do not pick, scratch, peel or deliberately burst blisters.

If a reaction develops, avoid applying unapproved creams, exfoliants or other active products until you've received appropriate advice.

Where possible, take clear photographs of the affected area and contact Seven Skin so the reaction can be assessed and documented.

Do not wait until your next scheduled appointment to report a concerning reaction.

If you require urgent medical attention

Seven Skin is not an emergency medical service, and messages may not be monitored outside clinic hours.

If you experience severe pain, extensive blistering, rapidly spreading redness, fever, signs of infection or a rapidly worsening reaction, seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111, your GP or an urgent treatment service as appropriate.

For a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 999.

Please also inform Seven Skin of any medical assessment or treatment received so your clinical records can be updated.

06. Before your next appointment

Every treatment is guided by your individual response, which means your skin and circumstances must remain suitable throughout your course.

Before attending your next appointment, please inform Seven Skin of any relevant changes, including:

  • New medication, supplements or changes to existing prescriptions.

  • Recent sun exposure, sunburn or tanning.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • Changes in your health or medical history.

  • New skin conditions, infections, wounds or irritation in the treatment area.

  • Unexpected reactions or prolonged sensitivity following your previous session.

  • Any other changes that may affect your suitability for laser treatment.

Please do not discontinue prescribed medication without advice from your prescribing clinician.

Your treatment may need to be postponed, modified or reassessed where necessary. A previous successful treatment or patch test does not guarantee suitability for every subsequent appointment.

07. Your ongoing treatment journey

Laser hair removal is a progressive treatment. The number of sessions required and the results achieved can vary depending on factors such as hair characteristics, treatment area, hormonal influences and individual response.

Completing your recommended course and following your aftercare guidance helps support the treatment process, but complete or permanent elimination of every hair cannot be guaranteed. Maintenance sessions may be required.

At Seven Skin, your progress is reviewed throughout your course, with treatment decisions based on your individual response and ongoing suitability.
